June 25, 2009

A committee with representation from all instructional sectors of FCPS was formed to address issues related to honors courses and the weighting of grades.  After considering the recommendations of this committee, the Superintendent recommends the following:

·  Honors courses in mathematics, science, English and social studies will   receive the 0.5 weight.  In these disciplines, students have the choice to take either regular or honors levels.

·  The weighting of honors courses will begin in 2009-2010, and will be retroactive.

·  Dual enrollment courses that are currently weighted will continue to be weighted.

Considerations for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology:

·  The weighting of 0.5 will be awarded to required mathematics and science courses at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The weighting of 0.5 will be awarded to all mathematics courses above the level of AP that are not dual enrollment and all science, mathematics, and technology research and mentorship courses.

·  The weighting of 0.5 will be awarded to required English and social studies courses at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. This includes the social studies elective courses that are required for the fourth social studies credit.

The assistant superintendent for instructional services has the discretion to review, with some or all members of the committee, additional courses for consistency in weighting.
